After saying our goodbyes to Andy, we started the first half of our 12 hour drive to the south. As the Loire Valley is almost halfway, we choose an Air BnB in Varennes-sur-Loire to spend the night.
One of the nice things about France,
is that you can find fabulous family run restaurants along the route
serving the 'Menu du Jour', for very reasonable prices.
We found this charming place and
had a wonderful meal for 15 euros! Sign me up!
Gizzard salad (don't turn your nose up until you have tried it) |
Fish soup with garlic toast, spicy aioli & cheese |
Salmon pasta |
Ile flottante (meringue in a custard sauce) |
Feeling quite full, we carried on and once closer to our destination, we took a small detour to see Chateau d'Usse which was one of the inspirations for Sleeping Beauty
We were quite amused to see these
lovely sunbathing beauties by the side of the river.
I could have spent the rest of the day by the bank of this river
...so peaceful
Tomorrow, we visit the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud
